Queen's Diamond Jubilee - Don't Miss Once In A Lifetime Events (AtoZ Travel Tips)

As we traveled around the world, we  stumbled upon some amazing once in a lifetime opportunities. Since today’s travel tip is for the letter Q, I will start with one of our big mistakes.  We were in England for the Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee, a celebration of 60 years at the throne. This was clearly a once in a lifetime event, not to be missed.   My family voted to skip the festivities as it was cold, raining, and crowded.  We were several hours away and would need to find a last minute, over-priced hotel in an already expensive city. On [Read More]

Follow Your Dreams and Find Your Own Style of Fun (AtoZ Travel Tips)

Follow Your Dreams and Find Your Own Style of Fun when you travel.  Choose the opportunities that interest you, not what’s popular. We spent nearly a week in Paris, and skipped the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Pompidou. We were too busy having fun our own way; well, maybe Paris is a bad example. I remember now, we changed our plane tickets to get out of there a as quickly as we could. A better example: New Zealand, our adopted home for the better part of  the last 10 years. My New Zealand looks like this:   My niece [Read More]

A Week In Wellington - An Express Visit to New Zealand's Capital City

We just spent a week in Wellington, only we did it in two days. If I gave it a name, it would be express travel to the world’s southern most capital city. We hit the highlights and even had time to relax at the bar. A morning flight, followed by a Super Shuttle drop off at the cable car. First stop on of our “Week in Wellington” – The Cable Car: At the top,  is the entrance to Wellington’s lovely Botanical Gardens. Being that we packed super light, all I had was a handbag, my niece a small backpack, so [Read More]

Jumping Into Haruru Falls, New Zealand - Would You Leap Into the Cold Water?

I am pretty sure I have passed the days when you would find me jumping into Haruru Falls! To be honest, I no longer jump out of trees into any body of water, but certainly not one that is swirling and cold. Don’t worry, I am not retiring from adventure.  Travel still tops my list of things to do, and swimming is fine but these days I prefer to leap off a yacht than out of a tree. It’s easy to see that my niece shares my adventurous spirit.  Or should I say, it is great having her around, so [Read More]

Diverted, Re-routed and an Emergency Landing - Flying Isn't Always the Fastest Way

My poor niece had a shocking time getting to New Zealand, all starting with one simple word: Diverted When it comes to travel, my sister and I are diametrically opposed. There is me who will travel the ends of the earth to get the perfect photo, and then there is my only sister who would prefer to never leave her home town. So I was surprised and thrilled when my niece asked if she could come for a visit. It would be her first time leaving the US via plane and her first time flying alone. We set it up [Read More]

A Bridge of Water

The world is filled with so many interesting things, and the bridge of water in Béziers, France is one of them.  I really wanted to see this strange bridge called a pont-canal or Orb Aqueduct. This particular one carries the Canal du Midí over the River Orb in Béziers.  So the effect is a bridge of water. The Canal du Midí in an important waterway, as it cuts through France from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, saving days of sea travel for boats making the passage.  There are many locks on the Canal du Midí, most on their own, but [Read More]
