Negotiate Everything - Stay Focused on Your Treasure (AtoZ Travel Tips)

Negotiate everything. We struggled with this when we first started traveling. Many years ago I was traveling with my cousin and hoping to buy an embroidered bag in Mexico for $10 similar to a $25 one I had seen in the US.  We crossed the border, found the bag at a market, and asked “How Much?”  She replied “Ten US Dollars.”  I said, “OK“.  My cousin pulled me out to tell me to negotiate. Now we always negotiate everything in open markets.  Depending on the country our starting price is between 5% – 80% of their initial request. How did [Read More]

Leave It At Home - Travel Light (AtoZ Travel Tips)

Travel light is probably the best travel tip I have. We started light, so we thought.  For two adults a teen and a tween we had two large backpacks and one medium wheeling bag.  It was just under half of our allowed weight. It was too much.  We had planned to ship home our thermals after we left Russia, but by the end we had shipped four boxes, nearly half of our initial belongings.   In February I wrote my list of the Top 10 Essential Things To Bring When Traveling Around the World so I won’t repeat it here.  [Read More]

Camels Make Great Transportation and Delicious Burgers (AtoZ Travel Tips) -WW*Linky

Camels.  What would I do with 100 camels? Camels do make great transportation when in the desert. But generally we prefer something a bit faster, like a plane, train, automobile or super yacht (a girl can dream). If we did use our four camels to get around, and maybe another one to carry the pack, what would we do with the other 95 camels? We could take fun camel photos, although even this would get old after a while.  Here are two of my favorites from last years travels, the first from Oman is the same camel my daughter is [Read More]

Don't Carry Fish on the Metro (WW *Linky)

The sign says it all, so when in Dubai – Don’t Carry Fish on the Metro. I laughed when I saw this funny sign. I hope you do too. Photo ©Rhonda Albom 2012-2013.  All rights reserved. Do you think it would be ok to take fish on the metro if it were in a paper bag?  What about a fish in a zip lock bag? A cooler?  I wonder what the fine would be if the fish were filleted and cooked up? So, if you want to stay out of trouble with the Dubai Police, here are a few extra [Read More]

Bastakiya and the Old Souqs - Finally, somewhere I really liked in Dubai

Bastakiya, finally I found somewhere I like in Dubai. We had a wonderful guide named Wahleed who took us on a walking tour of traditional Dubai at Bastakiya. The narrow streets clearly show what Dubai was like prior to the oil money. Homes were built close together in this way to give shade and to create wind tunnels. Pictures of Bastakiya Even though we didn’t buy much, I really enjoyed the old souqs. Here are a few of our favorite shots: After we were done, hubby negotiated a price for a 30 minute water taxi tour down the river ending [Read More]

We Went to Ski Dubai (after we returned the car)

When we were planning this trip we agreed we would not drive in the Middle East. After a few taxi rides which took us way out of the way to increase the fare and a bit of looking around for tours only to find them shockingly over priced, we decided to rent a car yesterday, just for the day trip to Abu Dhabi. This morning we had to return the car. The rental office is only a few kilometers from the hotel. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Just a few minor complications. Most streets on the map don’t have names, [Read More]
