We could see this out the window in the park and I had to go down and have a closer look.

Apparently the game has a name.  It’s called Jugger.

The teams here are a group of friends and this is a practice game.

They divided into their “teams” and when the 3 . . .2 . . . 1 . . .Go is called both sides rush to each other swinging.

Jugger

Once hit, a player drops to his knees and counts with fingers in the air so everyone in the game knows how long they are down.

Jugger

There is one player I haven’t quite figured out yet.  He swings a ball at the end of a chain and whacks the other teams players.  The confusing part, there is only one player with the ball and chain, so I am not sure how it is determined which side he/she plays on during the game. (Turns out in the “real” game, each team has one of these.  We are watching a practice).

Jugger

There is an object to the game.  There is a ball.  Each team has one carrier whose goal is to put the ball into a bucket.

And one other odd thing, there is someone who sits on the sideline and bangs on a symbol.

Jugger

Have you heard of this game before?  It was interesting.

  1. It sounds quite bizarre! So it is obviously some form of college pursuit – like real Quidditch. That’s quite bizarre as well.

  2. If the object of the game is to catch the golden snitch, what’s the point of knocking those balls past the keeper? It’s as confusing as Quidditch.

  3. In Quebec, medieval era lovers play Trollball. looks very similar… You can google Trollball :)

  4. Are you still in Spain?

This weekend there is the biggest Jugger Championship ever in Berlin, Germany.

And it is indeed fun, although it has nothing to do with Quidditch (since Jugger is older than Harry Potter).

  5. Well that definitely looks like an interesting game to watch.

  6. Hilarious game. Looks like fun.

  7. I am one of the players(juggers) from coruña.

This sport is played in many countries(Germany,Spain,Ireland,France,Costa Rica,Australia,Netherland,Italy,USA,etc),but the jugger comes from Germany.

Each team may field one chain at a time(But sometimes we haven´t 2 chains xD)

The timekeeper measures the time of the game. One stone is equal to one and a half seconds. The
acoustic signal must be loud enough that all players, referees and other personnel can hear it clearly.

  8. It is a sport inspired from the post-apocalyptic movie The Blood of Heroes, where Jugger is the only entertainment, like gladiator combat in the Roman Empire. Yes it’s a bizzare.

    • Thank Bryan – This is not a movie I have seen. Being a person who likes comedies, just by the title I think I wouldn’t like it – but now I am intrigued and may just have to watch it to see the Jugger.
