Never a dull moment when traveling with our family.

Tonight we decided we really wanted some paella for dinner. Seems simple enough when staying in the heart of Madrid.

We set off, map in hand, with clear directions to the “best” paella according to our hotel reception.  We turned down a street we hadn’t been to before and my daughter asked,

“Mom, why is that girl dressed like that?”

Time to explain prostitution to my tween.

“Is she a prostitute too?”
“Are they all prostitutes?”
“How does it work?”
“How do they get the men?”
“Look mom, a live sex show”
“Can I get a dress like that?” (Just kidding)

Yes, by now I am wondering why we were sent through the sex district. Fortunately it wasn’t too large and we were on the other side.

Following our map we walked to the next road, and then we were to turn to the left and go about two more blocks.

“Mom, I thought it wasn’t safe to go down dark, deserted streets at night.”

Well she had a good point, it was dark and there was no sign of life, so we decided to skip it, which meant heading back through the sex district.

Being that we are all a bit immature, we sent hubby ahead and watched from a distance.  With a bit of coaxing, hubby agreed and we got a good chuckle out of the women with their sexy voice “hola” and blowing kisses at hubby.

A bit embarrassed I think, hubby hurried through and waited for us on the other side.

We did end up with a great paella dinner at a place we found on our own.

  1. There’s a red light district in every city. It’s just part of life. I would have loved to have seen the video though.

    Have a terrific time. :)

  2. I remember the questions when walking with my family through Bourbon Street in New Orleans. At least your kids have a little bit of age on them.

  4. You won’t know what kids nowadays are able to do. They’re not like kids from a few past generations.

  5. Wot – no photos! Glad you got to have a great paella. We had our first paella in Barcelona and loved it. In Vigo, near Santiago do Compostella we saw the town people preparing to hold a communal paella in a gigantic pan in the town square

  7. OK, I’m sorely disappointed.
ALL of your other postings have pictures, but not a single picture in this one !

I really wanted to see your Paella.

What did you think I was talking about ?

  8. You are seeing all the fun sights, and it’s educational in more ways than one. I wonder if someone mis-heard Paella and thought you meant Puta, the Spanish word for pro…

    • LOL – educational in an unexpected way. As for Paella and puta – she did send us to a paella restaurant – so we think. It was down a dark and deserted street.

  9. That’s funny!

It’s true what Comedy plus says, there’s one in every city – when I went to college, I lived right in the middle of it. There was always a hooker trying to sollicit my boyfriend while we were walking back to my dorm.
