Did you ever see the movie “ Vacation” staring Chevy Chase? Do you remember the scene where he passes the giant road closed sign and then flies through the air damaging the car?
Well, fortunately that is not our story. Ours is much less dramatic.
We did see the first “Road Closed” sign, but the car in front of us ignored it, so we followed.
We saw the second “Road Closed” sign, but by now we were alone on the road.
We even saw the third “Road Closed” sign, and ignored that one too.
Unlike in the comedy, we stopped when we saw the giant pipe and fence blocking the road.

Hubby got out, asked for guidance and we were sent back from where we came, and then the two road workers posed for the camera:

Finally we made it to Oakham where we stayed with friends. (thanks Joyce and Graham). In the morning we had a look at this wonderful town. First the castle, which is famous for the custom of royals offering a horseshoe when they visit. The walls are filled with them, and they even offer an explanation as to why they are hung with the points facing down. It’s not that the luck will fall out, but rather so the devil cannot nest inside.
I was given permission by the curator to share these photos with you here at Laugh-Quotes:

Oakham Castle with our host Graham (thanks Graham)
Which way do you think horseshoes go? Do you buy this story about the devil, or is it just an excuse they came up with to justify having hung the horseshoes upside down?

I always thought horse shoes were lucky no matter how you hang them.

Looks like you are correct
I was always taught that all the good luck would fall out if a horseshoe was hung upside down.
Hmmm…
Me too, but they seem to have a very different attitude around here.
I was told that too many years ago. I guess the traditions change depending on where you are – and maybe on what people wanted you to believe as well.
I haven’t really been up that way much, although my family did come from Leicestershire. Pleased you are enjoying the UK.

I am loving the UK! As for tradition, you have to wonder if they just changed the legend because some of the Royals put their name that way on the horseshoe.
