packing lightIf you have been following our trip plans for a while, you know that I am really proud of our plan to be packing light.
First we purchased awesome travel backpacks – one is a 70 litre, the other is 65.

The goal: Four people, 2 large backpacks, 250 days.

The logic: for the portion of our trip when we take the train around South East Asia, it will be easier to carry back packs than suitcases.

If you have seen our 250 day overseas itinerary, you are probably thinking, “Hmm, I didn’t notice South East Asia on your itinerary.” You are correct, we took it out months ago, but we still thought the backpacks and packing light were a great idea.

So, yesterday we did a pre-pack trial. We gathered everything we are taking, and neatly put it in to two backpacks and guess what . . .

Packing Light failEpic Failure

What was I thinking?

Maybe, just maybe Hubby and I could get by in the two backpacks, but I have teen girls. And not just one, I have a tween and teen girl. I am not even sure their hair products would fit in the backpacks – but hair, shoes and clothes . . . OMG- clearly I have been mistaken.

Good thing we gave it a try with 2 weeks to go.

  • Russian Visas – nothing new to add here.
  • Yesterday, we had our family hair cut visit, at least for now we all look great. Wonder how we will be looking in about 6-8 months.
  • We thought we were done with all our shopping, turns out we need some more luggage.

  1. Well get them a backpack each and let them chose what they will take and what they won’t. Oh and they have to carry their own pack like you do. It’s only fair and it will lighten their load too.

    Have a terrific day. :)

    • LOL-Sandee, good plan. I guess I should have mentioned, the two backpacks were to be carried by hubby and our teen. Ankle doctor doesn’t want me to have the extra weight. So tween will get a new pack, and I will get a wheely bag. But I just couldn’t resist making fun of myself this morning :)

  2. I hope you have a wonderful time. I’ll be reading your posts, but I’m perfectly content to travel vicariously with you.

  3. I love your post about this backpacking thing and it’s good. But it will be better if I can go with you on a tour or vacation.

  9. The girls ought to be able to have their own backpacks, albeit smaller ones, but that will enable you to spread the load better, and don’t forget that you are probably going to acquire souvenirs along the way, which will weigh you down more.

I found when I did my 6 weeks trip back from Auckland that after a while it became too much to carry all the things we had brought, and so we decided to package things up and then mail them home. We can get some things shipped out from the UK for you if you need.

  10. I’d love to know what you have packed – how many changes of clothes – what type of jumpers etc. Details, details, details!! We are working through clothes at the moment so any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • LOL – We are less than three weeks in and tomorrow we are headed to the post office to ship stuff home already – not new things. So, after we ship we will each have two pair of shoes – one walking, one jandals, one rain good breathable rain coat, one fleece, one thermal and a few t-shirts/tank tops – nearly all solid colors. Plus we need long skirts, scarves and long sleeves for the middle east. Best pre-purchase so far, travel pants that zip off to shorts. Layers and a day pack. Hope that helps.
