Kids have it rough.  So many choices.  Today’s dilemma – Scouts vs. Girl Guides.  My teen has been in Sea Scouts for a year.  She loves the adventure.  It is far away.  She added a few more far away activities and the question becomes just how much chauffeuring around a parent should do.  So, being the open minded, fair child that she is, and being that she’s now old enough for Rangers, the highest level of Girl Guiding and not the one her sister is in, she (reluctantly) agreed to consider the very close to home Girl Guides.

We went to Guide’s registration.  It sounded exciting (to my sporty child).   The girls get to plan their own camps.  They carry their gear.  They dig their toilets.   They hike and tent camp.  They do wilderness exploration.  They build fires and cook outdoors.  Oh, so much fun and excitement. She was ready to give it a go.  Not to commit, but to check it out.  She could try it out for a couple of weeks and see how it goes, while still attending scouts on its regular night.

The first week – not too interesting, but there was still some potential.  They stayed in.  They did art.  They made kites.  She was neutral, unsure if it would rise to meet her expectations, or not.  Still willing to give it another go.

This week our conversation went something like this:

ME: How was Guides and what is that blue stuff all over your finger tips?

HER: Mum, you know I suck at putting on nail polish.

ME: Then why did you do your nails?

HER: We did it at Guides while we watched a movie.  It was for a badge.

ME: What kind of badge do you get for doing your nails?

HER: The badge wasn’t for our nails, it was for the movie.

ME: You get a badge for watching a movie?

HER: It was “Around the World in 80 Days” for our aviation badge.

Meanwhile at Scouts, they split up into teams, built rafts and then raced them.  They went sea kayaking out in the ocean and they inventoried all their camping gear and boats for the big weekend camping trip and boating races up North.  They scheduled fund raising for the the upcoming soap box derby.

Can you take a guess which she picked?

Confession and a bit of background – a bit of writer’s liberty, the movie was only a “part” of the badge activities.  Scouts are co-ed in New Zealand. Girl Guides are part of the same organization as Girl Scouts in America.

Ok, I know it is only slightly related, but as I was writing this, two comedy shirts popped into my mind:
